Saturday Opera: Vienna State Opera: Ariadne auf Naxos

The Vienna State Opera presents a new production of Richard Strauss’s beloved chamber opera starring the Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen.

When Richard Strauss’s long-term collaborator, the Austrian novelist and librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote the to the composer proposing “a thirty-minute opera for chamber orchestra. . . called ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’ (‘Ariadne on Naxos’)” combining “heroic mythological figures in 18th-century costume” with commedia d’arte comic characters, he received a rather tepid response. Yet, despite this, Hofmannsthal persisted by suggesting Strauss provide incidental music to the famous French playwright Molière’s “Le Bourgeois gentilhomme” (‘The Bourgeois Gentleman”) as well. Strauss’s reticence was palpable and Hoffmannsthal began to pout: “I must say quite plainly your extremely paltry and cool words over the completed “Ariadne”. . . have vexed me somewhat.”

Thanks, as the biographer and conductor Norman Del Mar put it, to the composer’s “good humour and courtesy” he calmed his collaborator’s nerves by setting about working on the projected opera (Strauss attended a Berlin production of the Molière and described the play as “indescribably funny”) which opens with Prologue set in “the house of the richest man in Vienna” where his guests, feasting on an elaborate banquet, are treated to an opera and a comedic farce and, in the process, the two events become intertwined. This enrages the opera’s composer who has been ordered to cut some of his music to make way for the theatrical troupe’s performance. Yet he finds himself falling in love with their leading lady Zerbinetta, who consols him with the words “a moment is nothing – a glance is much.”

This Prologue was in fact composed for the second version of the score after the first, in which the Molière and the Greek tragedy are two separate entities, garnered a lukewarm response for audiences at best, hence Strauss spent nearly four years entirely reworking the opera before it received a much more favourable response at its 1916 premiere.

When the curtain finally goes up on the opera within Strauss’s opera, we find Minos’s daughter Ariadne, who has been jilted by Theseus, alone on the island of Naxos. Interviewed by the Metropolitan Opera’s YouTube channel ahead of her 2022 debut in the role with the aforementioned opera company, the Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen notes Ariadne is “a woman who loves with every part of her body, and is missing him so much that to die would be the only way out from this and then, of course, there’s a little twist at the end where the prince is coming, so to speak.”

While the story of Ariadne dates from antiquity, Davidsen finds her and the juxtaposition of drama and comedy (and beyond that, high art and popular entertainment) to be entirely relatable to modern audiences: “I think the beauty in this opera is also the fact that you combine this miserable story with the comedy. I think there is something there in life; you can have the worst day, you can have the biggest breakup, the biggest loss, and then you have to go out on the street and you’re met with whatever life gives you.”

Opera on 3: Wagner's Die Walküre

From the Royal Ballet and Opera, conductor Antonio Pappano and director Barrie Kosky reunite to continue the mythical adventure that began with Das Rheingold in 2023. The second chapter of Wagner's epic Ring Cycle deals with the fallout from Ruler of the Gods Wotan's decision to steal the all-powerful but cursed ring. Caught up in the saga are his mortal children Sieglinde and her long-lost brother Siegmund, who reunite and fall in love. And his favourite daughter Brünnhilde, who when not collecting dead warriors for Wotan's celestial palace is willing to disagree with and disobey him. Royal Opera House Conductor Laureate Antonio Pappano conducts a stellar cast including Christopher Maltman, Elisabet Strid and Natalya Romaniw. Andrew McGregor presents and is joined by Flora Willson to discuss Wagner's intricate score.

Tjajkovskijs Spader dam tar upp hemligheter, kärlek och tur - eller otur - i spel. Vi ser en grevinna och förälskade ungdomar i den ryska överklassen.

Det hela utspelar sig i Sankt Petersburg omkring år 1800. Lycka och olycka, kärlek och ren åtrå i en berättelse där spelkort som på hemliga vägar gett en stor förmögenhet. Operan bygger på en roman av Pusjkin.

Är kanske passionen mera frågan om en besatthet? Frågan är här hur mycket vi vågar ge efter för vår längtan - både efter kärlek och efter ett långt och rikt, ekonomiskt rikt liv. Hur mycket är vi beredda att offra, riskera?

I centrum finns en ung man, Hermann, som sitter vid spelbordet varje kväll utan att spela - han beter sig underligt och vi får reda på att han är förälskad i en flicka han inte vet vad hon heter eller vem hon är. Det är Lisa. Lisa lever med sin farmor, Grevinnan, som varit vid hovet i Paris och där fått namnet Spader Dam eftersom hon spelade så mycket. Hon höll på att bli ruinerad men klarade sig med hjälp av tre kort hon fått efter att han givit efter för en greve i Paris. Korten döljer en hemlighet.

Hermann får reda på att Lisa är förlovad med en furst Jeletzkij men Lisa själv blandar ihop männen och tror att Hermann är hennes trolovade. En natt släpper de alla hämningar.

Det blir mer och mer komplicerat. Hermann blir besatt av historien om det tre korten eftersom de skulle hjälpa honom ur fattigdom och ge honom en möjlighet att vinna Lisas hjärta.

The Metropolitan Opera presents a radio broadcast of an exciting highlight from the 2024-25 season: the Grand Finals Concert of the Met’s Eric and Dominque Laffont Competition, recorded in March. Nine hopeful young artists advanced from a group of more than 1,500 aspiring singers to perform in front of a packed opera house, accompanied by the famed Met orchestra led by Maestro Karen Kamensek. They sang for cash prizes, audience acclaim, and the chance to show a panel of judges – and the world – that they belong on opera’s grandest stage. The concert was hosted by star mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, with a special performance by guest artist, soprano Janai Brugger.
