LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Mendelssohn, Der Onkel aus Boston

In my notes for the broadcast last month of Franz Schubert’s lyric comedy “Die Verschworenen”, (1823), I mentioned that Schubert still remains under appreciated as a composer of opera, even though he wrote 16 operatic works. Well Felix Mendelssohn also wrote a small quantity of operatic music that remains practically unknown even now in the 21st century. All of Mendelssohn’s lyric theater music which was written early on in his life as a child prodigy. It’s thought his three-act comic opera, Die Beiden Neffen, Oder Der Onkel aus Boston was composed in 1821 when he was twelve years old. Der Onkel was given two private performances in 1824 at the Mendelssohn family residence in Berlin on the occasion of his fifteenth birthday. Der Onkel is the last of four such surviving German language Singspiel compositions by the boy Mendelssohn.

German conductor Helmut Rilling prepared a modern performing score of Der Onkel for the world premiere recording in 2004 of the entire opera for the German Hannsler Klassik Record label. Mendelssohn’s music for Der Onkel builds upon the lyric theatrical precedence of Mozart and Weber. There’s nothing in it that prefigures Wagner, although you might think of a style more along the line of Otto Nicolai’s operatic take on Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor (1849). The recording of Der Onkel was made in the Philharmonie Hall in Essen for West German radio WDR. Rilling conducts the two performing groups he founded, with chorus of the Gachinger Kantorei of Stuttgart and the orchestra of the Bach Collegium Stuttgart. The Hannsler Klassik recording was released stateside on CD courtesy of the now defunct Musical Heritage Society

Selections from Mendelssohn’s Der Onkel went over the air on this program not so long ago on Sunday, April 19th of this year.

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Smetana's "The Bartered Bride" from the Vienna State Opera

Most people have heard selections form Bedrich Smetana’s “The Bartered Bride,” but this week’s Sunday Opera (6/14 3:00 p.m.) will give listeners the change to enjoy the entire work in a live performance from the Vienna State Opera.

The libretto is by Karel Sabina and is regarded as one of the major contributions to the creation of “Czech” music. It was written between 1863 and 1866 and was first performed in Prague in May of 1866. The gentle comedy proves love can overcome the ambitions of overbearing parents and a scheming marriage broker.

During a festive church fair in Bohemia in the mid-19th century, Mařenka (Slavka Zamecnikova) is deeply distressed. Her parents (Krusina – Franz Xaver Schlect & Ludmila – Margaret Plummer), pressed by debts to the wealthy landowner Tobiáš Mícha (Ivo Stanchev), have arranged for her to marry Mícha’s stuttering, timid son, Vašek (Michael Laurenz). Mařenka loves an outsider named Jeník (Pavol Breslik), and she vows to her parents and the pompous marriage broker, Kecal (Peter Kellner), that she will marry no one but Jeník.

The meddling broker Kecal tries to bribe Jeník into abandoning Mařenka using 300 guilders. Jeník surprisingly accepts the money. However, he adds a strict condition to the contract: Mařenka may legally only marry Mícha's son

The villagers are disgusted that Jeník has "sold" his bride. Meanwhile, Mařenka disguises herself and flirts with Vašek, convincing him that his intended bride (Mařenka) is a violent monster so he will reject her.

A traveling circus sets up camp, and the naive Vašek falls head over heels for Esmeralda (Ilia Staple), a circus dancer. The circus folk trick Vašek into dressing up as a dancing bear for their show. Heartbroken, Mařenka initially agrees to marry Vašek. But before the wedding, Jeník reveals his master plan to Mícha and the village: he is actually Jan, Mícha’s long-lost older son from his first marriage whom his stepmother had cast out.

Because Jeník is, in fact, Mícha’s son, the contract is fully met. Mařenka happily embraces Jeník, Vašek gets to run off with his circus performer, and true love triumphs.

Other members of the cast include Matthaus Schmidlechner and Alex Ilvakhin. Tomas Hanus is the conductor, and he’s leading the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus.

Since we have over an hour that we can fill after the opera, stay tuned and join Michael Kownacky for the very familiar work by Smetana, “Ma Vlast.” Instead of the two selections usually heard as excerpts, we’ll hear all six tone poems that have been cobbled together in this symphonic gem. This performance features the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Tomas Kucher. [Michael Kownacky] (3 hrs., 30 min.)
