LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

SPECIAL PROGRAM: Van Diemen’s Band and Andrew O’Connor in Transformations

Embedded in glorious devotional music of 17th century Germany performed in this concert are world premieres of works in response to them by contemporary Australian composers.

A father’s moving lament for his son, Fili mi Absalom by Heinrich Schütz inspired Brooke Shelley to compose her response guiding the soul from grief, anger and disbelief to acceptance.

Buxtehude’s cantata Mein Herz is bereit (my heart is ready) prompted Alice Chance to reflect on situations where our heart is ready for something and yet, for whatever reason, we don’t get it. Many unsuccessful attempts to reach that goal make the fulfilment more beautiful and satisfactory.

Recorded live in concert at St Canice Church Sandy Bay on 15, February 2026 by ABC Classic. Producer Toby Frost. Engineer Veronika Vincze.

Program
Johann Schop: Pavan à 5 in D minor
Heinrich Schütz: Fili Mi, Absalon

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Gluck, Alceste
This was the composer's pioneering work in his reform of eighteenth century Italian opera seria, first staged in Vienna in 1767. The Alceste opera of Christopf Willibald Gluck is a truly "classical" lyric stagework. Gluck set a revolutionary preface to the published score in which he inveighed against the late baroque degeneracy of the artform. Long ago on Sunday, April 17, 1988 I broadcast what was even back then a conventional and not exactly "reformed" recorded interpretation of Alceste from 1956 on Decca London/Richmond Treasury LP's, with Geraint Jones conducting his own orchestra and chorus, all of them British musicians backing the big-voiced Swedish diva soprano Kirsten Flagstad miscast in the title role. (She was an aging diva then, but her voice was still impressive.) That was once the only recording of the original Italian language version of Alceste available on disc. (The later Paris version of 1776 is a quite different remake of the opera with a French libretto.)

Teresa Ringholz possesses a lighter, brighter vocal quality than the doughty Flagstad. Her spinto soprano voice is much better suited to the historically informed performance practice of the Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra, playing instruments of the period. Arnold Ostman conducts the orchestra, chorus and singing cast. The 1767 Vienna version of Alceste was recorded in1998 at the historic Drottningholm Theatre- a remarkably well-preserved eighteenth century structure located not far from Stockholm where the Swedish royalty for a time maintained their Summer residence. Reviewer James Camner cannot praise the 1999 Naxos CD release of the 1767 Alceste enough. Writing for Fanfare magazine (Nov/Dec 1999 issue), he states forthrightly it's "a triumph on every level, a magnificent set [of three compact discs] that is a must for every opera collection...This is the landmark release of a landmark opera." (3 hrs., 30 min.)

Cresc... Biennale 2026 - Concert "Of Swarms and Loners"

Keine andere Komposition hat in der Neuen Musik derart viele künstlerische Reflexe ausgelöst wie "Die Winterreise".

Pia Davila, Sopran
Julian Prégardien, Tenor
Ensemble Modern
Leitung: Lucie Leguay

Bernard Foccroulle: Winterreisende
Helena Cánovas Parés: Kein Frühling mehr
Thierry Tidrow: Le domaine mystérieux
Malika Kishino: Verlorene Farben
Sarah Nemtsov: Komm

(2 hrs.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Pavel Haas' "Sarlatan" ("The Charlatan")
By Michael Kownacky

This week’s Sunday Opera (4/12 3:00 p.m.) is turning to the work of a mostly forgotten Czech composer, Pavel Haas through his only opera, written in 1936, “Sarlatan,” “The Charlatan.”

Haas was one of the composers and performers to be used by the Nazis as part of their propaganda display at Terezin (Theresienstadt concentration camp) for the Red Cross. Immediately after the show for the Red Cross was over, all of the Terezin captives were sent to the extermination camps where Haas was killed on October 17, 1944 at the age of 45.He drew attention to himself, saving conductor Karel Ancerl whom he thought a great artist, especially compared to his own believed talents.

“Sarlatan” Is the story of a quack doctor named Pustrpalk (Vladimir Chmelo) and his traveling troupe who has some lucky successes with his various tonics that fade when he kills a rival during a treatment. Narrowly escaping a hanging, his life spirals out of control and he begins drinking heavily, which leads to his tragic end.

The cast includes Anda-Louise Bogza, Miroslav Svejda, Leo Marian Vodicka, Ladislav Miejnek, Jilka Svododova, and Jiri Kublik.Israel Yinon conducts the Prague State Opera Orchestra and the Prague Philharmonic Choir.

After the opera, host Michael Kownacky has more music of Haas scheduled, including Haas Wind Quintet, String Quartet No. 2, Piano Suite, and Radio Overture, a piece rescued from Terezin after the captives were sent to Auschwitz. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
