LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Schubert, Die Verschworenen | Auber, Le Cheval de Bronze

It's the best kept secret in the history of Western classical music: Franz Schubert wrote opera. A lot of opera, actually. In addition to his song cycles and hundreds of assorted lieder, and the well known incidental music for Rosamunde (1823), he wrote sixteen operatic works in all: nine complete operas, the others in various stages of completion. The last of them was Der Graf von Gleichen, much of it written in 1827, left incomplete at his death in 1828. The reconstructed Der Graf von Gleichen in its world premiere recording for the American Centaur label went over the air on this program on Sunday, December 7, 2025. The domestic comedy Die Verschworenen ("The Conspirators," D. 787) was composed in 1823 and never performed in Schubert's short lifetime. It received a successful concert performance in Frankfurt in 1861 and thereafter scored a series of little successes in both professional and amateur productions, including one in New York City in 1875. As a lyric stagework it's a German language adaptation of the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata by Aristophanes dealing with the war between the sexes. In Schubert's one act version there's a gender-bending trouser role. Die Verschworenen finally got the recording it deserved in 1996, including its intended overture in reconstruction, as derived from an unstaged broadcast production by German Radio Cologne, in co-production with the French record label Opus 111. This is the first true world premiere complete recording of this delightful little melodic gem of an opera presented on one Opus 111 compact disc. It eclipses a previous 1953 Vox LP release in mono sound.

What follows this short Schubert opera recording will sound like a similar German romantic opera, but is actually a French opera comique in three acts by Daniel Francoise Esprit Auber (1782-1871). Le Cheval de Bronze ("The Bronze Horse," 1835) was one of Auber's most popular lyric stageworks, here sung in German language translation as Das eherne Pferd. It's a French fairy tale opera derived from the tales of The Arabian Nights. The story concerns the lifesize statue of a horse with magic properties. It can transport a rider to fantastical far-off lands. Auber's "Bronze Horse" opera was broadcast from the studios of ORF Austrian Radio Vienna in 1953. Tenor Kurt Equiluz is heard as Yanko, the young Chinese peasant who is the hero of the piece. He gets to ride the magical metallic beast. The Austrian label Orfeo released Le Cheval de Bronze in 2020 in digitally upgraded monaural sound. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: "Daphne" and "Feuersnot" - Two One-act Operas by Richard Strauss

We’re turning to two of Richard Strauss’ lesser-known one-act operas on this week’s Sunday Opera: “Daphne” and “Feuersnot” (“The Need for Fire” or “Lack of Fire”) instead of his more often performed “Salome” or “Elektra.”

“Daphne” was first performed in 1938 and is loosely based on the myth of Ovid’s “Metamorphosis” about the chaste maid of the title (June Anderson) who is pursued by a childhood friend, Leukippos (Roberto Sacca), and the god Apollo (Scott MacAllister).

Apollo accidentally kills Leukippos and, in regret, arranges for Daphne to become a part of the nature she loves by changing into a tree to protect her from other men.

The cast also includes Birgit Remmert as Gaea and Daniel Lewis Williams as Peneios with the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Stefan Anton Reck.

“Feuersnot” or “The Lack of Fire” from 1901 is said to be a parody of Richard Wagner’s concept of “redemption through love.” Here, the alchemist Kunrad (Bernd Weikl) falls in love with Diemut (Julia Varady), the daughter of the mayor (Helmut Berger-Tuna) of the city to which he has just come.

However, Diemut does not reciprocate his affections and leaves him dangling, literally, when he tries to call on her. In retaliation, Kunrad extinguishes the bonfires (and all other flames) that are an integral part of the solstice celebrations and says they will only be rekindled by the “body of a virgin in heat” which shocks the townspeople (as it did the audiences and censors of the time). As shocking as it is, it does bring the opera to a happy ending for everyone involved.

This cast also includes Ruthild Engert-Ely, Kaja Borris, Elisabeth Wachutka, Hans Dieter Bader, Manfred Schenk, Raimund Grumbach, Waldemar Wild, Kieth Engen, Fridrich Lenz, Marga Schiml, Willi Brokmeier, and Andrea Trauboth with the Bavarian Radio Chorus and the Munich Radio Orchestra with Heinze Fricke, conducting.

We’ll finish the afternoon with more music of Strauss that follows the idea of change with his Metamorphosen (performed by the English String Orchestra conducted by William Boughton) which some have come to believe was his response to the change and destruction of Germany seen at the end of the war although Strauss never admitted to it. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
