LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Rossini, Semiramide

French grand opera of the Romantic period actually began with this work by the Italian Gioachhino Rossini, who left Italy after the successful Venice premiere of Semiramide in 1823 with his new wife. They resettled in Paris, where he would write the French language Guillaume Tell (1829), his final monumental work in the genre. Semiramide played all over Europe in short order. All the great singers of Rossini's time wanted roles in it. But as the nineteenth century progressed the age of bel canto singing came and went, and Semiramide gradually passed out  of the repertoire.

Written at the dawn of the bel canto style, its coloratura passages required prodigious vocal agility. There were no more singers who could handle the demands of the music. That is, until the bel canto revival of the mid twentieth century. One remarkable voice championed this music: the Australian soprano Joan Sutherland. She was at the height of her coloratura powers in 1965 when she recorded Semiramide for the Decca/London label. Sutherland is heard in the title role, opposite another remarkable singer who took part in the revival, the American mezzo Marilyn Horne. Sutherland's husband conductor Richard Bonynge again is in charge, directing the London Symphony Orchestra and Ambrosian Opera Chorus. This recording was last broadcast on Sunday, May 23, 2010. The opera had been abridged, no doubt so it could be accommodated onto three vinyl LP's. Hear it again this Sunday in digital transfer to three compact discs. (There is another, more complete recording of Semiramide on four Opera Rara CD's which I presented, due to its length, over two Sundays in January of 2019.)(3 hrs., 30 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Re-Airing of Tchaikovsky's "The Enchantress"

Because of a technical glitch, last month’s presentation of Tchaikovsky’s rarely performed opera “The Enchantress” ended before the final act and supplementary pieces could air.  Because many of you let us know that you wanted to hear the end of the opera, we’re re-airing it on this week’s Sunday Opera.  Enjoy!

When it comes to operas by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, works like “Eugene Onegin,” “The Queen of Spades,” and even “Mazeppa” may come to mind first. However, on this week’s opera (2/16 3:00 p.m.), we’ll be re-airing an 1887 tragedy entitled “The Enchantress” where the heroine is one of those poor people who’s just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and because of the misplaced ire of another woman, is one of several people who dies.

Nastasya (Rimma Glushkova) is an inn keeper who is much loved and desired by many, especially by Prince Nikita (Oleg Klyonov), much to the consternation of the princess, his wife (Lyudmila Simonova) and his son Yuri (Lev Kuznetsov). Yuri originally seeks Natasaya out to avenge his seething mother who believes that Nastasya is to blame for her husband’s philandering. However, when Yuri sees Nastasya, he immediately falls in love with her (as she has done with him at the beginning of the opera).

Adding to the conflict is an old deacon named Mamyrov (Yevgeniy Vladimirov) who is now Nastasya’s sworn enemy because she rejected his advances. Mamyrov tries to wreak his revenge on Nastasya through the more-than-willing Princess with disastrous results resulting in the deaths of Nastasya, Yuri, and the Prince.

They are joined by The Great Academic Choir and Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio and Television with Gennedy Provatorov conducting.

If you’re like us and enjoy the music of Tchaikovsky, stay tuned after the opera for three more of his works: the Serenade for String in C major, the Sleeping Beauty Waltz, and his charming Mazurka in D major.

We hope you’ll join us for an afternoon of wonderful music with which you might not be that familiar. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
