Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Berlioz, Benvenuto Cellini

Hector Berlioz’ comic opera Benvenuto Cellini (1839) is infrequently performed today because in makes so many demands on singers and instrumentalists alike. Although he was the most advanced French composer of the earlier Romantic era, Berlioz’ music was more readily accepted in Germany. The Paris premiere of Benvenuto Cellini witnessed a storm of protest. Berlioz maintained it deserved a better fate. The audience at Weimar thought better of it. Franz Liszt championed this work and helped Berlioz revise it. Portions of it wound up in orchestral form in the Roman Carnival Overture. Berlioz identified himself with the hero of the opera. Benvenuto Cellini was a true Renaissance man: a great creative artist and restless free spirit who was ever at odds with officialdom. The actual story of the opera has to do with the trials and tribulations of casting a bronze statue on commission from one of the Sixteenth century popes. The artist's wayward love life also gets in the way, but in the end Pope Clement VII sees to it that all comes out right.

Way back on Sunday, October 4th, 1987 I aired a Philips recording made with the cast of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with tenor Nicolai Gedda in the title role. Colin Davis directed the cast and Covent Garden chorus and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Fanfare magazine’s reviewer Adrian Corleonis liked that recording, but had reservations about the 2003 Opera D’Oro CD release that captures a live 1973 broadcast of a theater performance of a further rearranged version of the opera made by RAI Radio Italy, Rome. The Pope in this version reverts to the status of a Cardinal. Tenor Franco Bonisoli is heard as Cellini. Seiji Ozawa conducts the RAI Orchestra and Chorus. This recording might be a bootleg affair, made by someone in the audience. It’s in mono sound in the stereo age- maybe a giveaway of its questionable origins. Yet the sound isn’t bad exactly. Tenor Bonisoli’s voice is clearly heard, and his vocal characterization is bold and impressive, so reviewer Corleonis tells us. (Fanfare, July- August 2003). (3 hrs., 30 min.)

„Das ist eindeutig der Beginn der Oper bei Mozart! Es ist zwar ein geistliches Werk, aber da ist alles schon vorhanden, was man später dann zum Beispiel in der ‚Zauberflöte‘ findet“, so die Dirigentin Camille Delaforge. Beim Musikfest Bremen war sie zu Gast mit ihrem Originalklangorchester Il Caravaggio, um das selten zu hörende früheste Bühnenwerk von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart aufzuführen. Er komponierte das geistliche Singspiel „Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots“ als elfjähriges Wunderkind für den Hof des Salzburger Fürsterzbischofs. In der ursprünglich halbszenisch aufgeführten Parabel zur Fastenzeit geht es um die Entscheidung des Menschen zwischen den Freuden des Lebens und einem gottgefälligen Dasein. Vier allegorische Figuren kämpfen um die Seele des wankelmütigen Christen. (1 hr., 55 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Beethoven's "Fidelio" from the Vienna State Opera

Beethoven’s only opera, “Fidelio,” is the centerpiece of this week’s all-Beethoven Sunday Opera (6/21 3:00 p.m.) in a production from the Vienna State Opera with Maylim Bystrom in the titular role.

Leonore (Bystrom) is the heroine who disguises herself as the boy Fidelio to infiltrate a Spanish prison in order to find her husband, Florestan (David Butt Philip), who is a falsely accused political prisoner.

Leonore (as Fidelio) works for Rocco (Tareq Nazmi), the jailer, in order to search for Floristan, but there is a problem. Rocco’s daughter, Marzelline (Kathrin Zukowski), has fallen in love with “Fidelio” and is spurning the advances of Rocco’s assistant, Jaquinto (Daniel Jenz), who now harbors a great deal of resentment because “Fidelio” seems to be stealing his love and his job.

Leonore finally does make it into the dungeon where Floristan is to be killed on orders of the corrupt prison governor Don Pizarro (Christopher Maltman) where she is to dig a grave with Rocco.

As the drama unfolds, Leonore and Pizarro have a showdown which is interrupted by the arrival of the king’s minister, Don Fernando (Simonas Strazdas) who announces that all of the political prisoners have been pardoned. Pizarro’s crimes come to light, and Leonore and Floristan are happily reunited as the other political prisoners are freed.

The Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus are conducted by Franz Welser-Most.

Our afternoon of Beethoven continues with one of his most familiar piano works, the Piano Sonata No, 14 in C-Sharp Minor which, of course, is better known as the “Moonlight Sonata,” a title not bestowed on it until after Beethoven’s death. Our pianist is Alessio Bax.

We’ll follow that with one of Beethoven’s often overlooked symphonies, the Symphony No. 4 in B flat major. This charming little (relatively) work is unfortunately overshadowed by its symphonic neighbors, the “Eroica” and the “Fifth,” but it still holds its own and is quite charming. Here it will be performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by Sir Georg Solti.

We’ll close out our time together with a work that might be less familiar in his complete incidental music to the Kotzebue play “The Ruins of Athens.” Although one often hears excerpts from the piece (as in his music to Goethe’s “Egmont,”), here, we’ll all of the incidental pieces including vocals by soprano Mechthild Gessendorf and baritone Roger Andrews. They’re joined by the New York Choral Artists and the Orchestra of St. Lukes with Dennis Russell Davies conducting. [Michael Kownacky] (3 hrs., 30 min.)
