LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

(2 hrs.)

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Tchaikovsky: Pique Dame

Russia's most famous composer wrote ten complete operas, two of which achieved international status: Eugene Onegin (1878) and Pique Dame or The Queen of Spades (1890). Peter Tchaikovsky's brother Modest prepared the libretto for Pique Dame, which is based on a story by Alexander Pushkin, Russia's first great author of international stature. Pushkin's original tale is too cynical for most theater-goers to take in unadulterated form. In the opera the young military man, Hermann, is not a cold-hearted monomanaical cardshark. Then again, in Pushkin, there is no double suicide.

A number of recordings of the opera have been made that reside in our station's holdings. Two different ones I have featured previously, on Sundays in November of 1988 (Melodiya LPs/Bolshoi Theatre) and April of 1991 (Sony Classical CDs/ Bulgarian National Opera). Then came Vladimir Jurowski's recorded interpretation with the Israel Philharmonic and Ukrainian tenor Oleg Kulko as Hermann (Helicon Classics), which went over the air on Sunday, September 22, 2019.

Our WWUH classical record library has acquired yet another recording of Pique Dame with Mariss Jansons conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of Bavarian Radio and tenor Mischa Dyduk as Pushkin's anti-hero. (A BR Klassik compact disc release in 2015.) It was recorded in a live concert performance in Munich, with very minimal audience noise. This may be the best of all the "Dames" I've presented over the decades. Fanfare reviewer Huntley Dent says of it,"...this powerful new release is hard to surpass." (Fanfare, March/April, 2016.)

WDR 3 Oper (Starts at 1804/1:04PM): Caterina Cornaro

There’s more French music on tap after the opera. This time, it’s from the pen of Andre Messenger adapted and arranged by John Lanchberry.

Messenger composed the two-act ballet “Les Deux Pigeons” for the Paris Opera where it was premiered on October 18, 1886. In 1961, Frederick Ashton choreographed the Lanchberry version to be performed at the Royal Opera House on February 14th which was the perfect date for this story of the triumph of love with a happy ending. In this complete recording, Lanchberry conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
