LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed at the top of this page in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe is now on Standard Time. North America is moving tonight from Daylight Time to Standard Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. At the start of this day GMT, in North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (8) hours for Hawaii. In the different regions in North America, at 2:00AM local time, Daylight time ends. So the balance of this page then lists everything in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Standard Time. In North America, now subtract five (5) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, six (6) hours for the Central Time Zone, and seven (7) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract eight (8) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and nine (9) hours for Alaska, and ten (10) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland are now on GMT throughout. In most of the rest of Europe add one (1) hour (some Eastern European countries are two (2) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

At the Opera with Sean Bianco: Host Sean Bianco brings you a full-length opera featuring great voices from the past and present followed by “Opera Potpourri.”

Alexander Serov's Judith, February 16, 2019
Tune in to hear a new opera to At the Opera, Alexander Serov's Judith. This opera is based upon the Book of Judith in the Bible.

Judith is an opera in five acts, composed by Alexander Serov during 1861–1863. Derived from renditions of the story of Judith from the Old Testament Apocrypha, the Russian libretto, though credited to the composer, has a complicated history. The premiere took place in 1863 in Saint Petersburg. This stage debut, supplemented with his next opera Rogneda, made Serov the most important Russian opera composer of the 1860s.

SPECIAL PROGRAM: Lelio
As celebrations of Berlioz begin to thrust towards an inevitable climax the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Pascal Rophe explore his most dramatic, and racy, orchestral works. Beginning with Waverley, his overture inspired by Walter Scott's mythical Perthshire, the orchestra is then joined by mezzo soprano Karen Cargill to perform his passionate musical monologue describing the death of Cleopatra. And after the interval a rare chance to hear the large-scale music drama Lelio. A strange form of choral and orchestral cantata-cum-melodrama it was originally conceived as a sequel to Symphonie Fantastique - recounting the continuing psychological adventures of a lecherous, self-obsessed, sex maniac with delusions of artistic grandeur.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Trueman: Olagon | Fussell: Cymbelline
This Sunday I offer you two lyric theater pieces of the twenty first century. First comes Dan Trueman's Olagon: A Cantata in Doublespeak. Essentially this is a modern retelling of the ancient Irish epic poem the Tain Bo Cuiailnge or "The Cattle Raid of Cooley," as translated and interpreted by the contemporary Irish poet Paul Muldoon. The "doublespeak" element in this cantata refers to what is called "macaronic verse," a practice of mixing languages going back to the Middle Ages. One notable example of this is the mixing of the vernacular and Latin in the Carmina Burana that Orff set to music. In Olagon it's modern English and ancient Irish that gets chopped up. Dan Trueman is an American composer and fiddler who accompanies the Irish vocalist Iarla O Lionaird. Additional vocals are provided by Trueman and the six members of the Eighth Blackbird ensemble, who are all accomplished instrumentalists. Eighth Blackbird is an American outfit, and Olagon was given its world premiere recording stateside at Princeton University in 2015. The Chicago-based label Cedille issued Olagon on two compact discs in 2017.

American composer Charles Fussell (b. 1938) has been part of the Boston area's musical life for a couple of decades. Among his many talents and capacities he's a composer for the lyric stage. A recording of his chamber opera The Astronaut's Tale (1996) went over the air on this program on Sunday, September 2, 2012. Fussell is but one of a long line of composers to be inspired by the plays of William Shakespeare. He fashioned another chamber opera after Shakespeare's Cymbelline (1611). Fussell wrote, "The idea of a musical depiction of this work came as a result of seeing the Hartford Stage productions of Shakespeare. Their Cymbelline, directed by Mark Lamos (who later moved to opera)... touched me deeply..." Fussell's Cymbelline received its world premiere recording in 2016 in the studio of Futura Productions in Roslindale, Massachusetts. The three vocal soloists are joined by an ensemble of ten instrumentalists drawn from the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, directed by Gil Rose. The recording comes to us on a single BMOP Sound compact disc. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Ambroise Thomas' "Hamlet"
“Hamlet” with a happy ending? Well, sort of… and we’ll hear it on this week’s Sunday Opera (2/17 3:00 p.m.) with Ambroise Thomas’ 1868 operatic version of Shakespeare’s play. The libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carre, authors of numerous adaptations and opera texts, had the arduous task of shaving down the massive play to mixed reviews – where some critics believe their final product is a concise representation of Shakespeare, others feel that the lack of secondary characters like the gravediggers and the “smoothing” of Shakespeare’s coarse language lessens its impact.

In this version, Hamlet lives, but he lives with the guilt of Ophelia’s death. The recording we’ll be using comes from 1993 and features Thomas Hampson as Hamlet, June Anderson as Ophelia, Samuel Ramey as Claudius, Gregory Kunde as Laertes, and Denyce Graves as Gertrude, and they are joined by the Ambrosian Opera Chorus and The London Philharmonic conducted by Antonio De Almeida. Of special interest is Ophelia’s impressive mad scene which Anderson handles beautifully. After the opera, host Michael Kownacky will continue with an early work of Thomas, his Opus 1, a String Quartet in E featuring the Daniel Quartet. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
