LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Standard Time. Europe and North America have moved to Standard Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In the United States, subtract five (5) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, six (6) hours for the Central Time Zone, and seven (7) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract eight (8) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and nine (9) hours for Alaska, and ten (10) hours for Hawaii. In most of Europe add one (1) hour (some Eastern European countries are two (2) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

KEY TO READING THE SCHEDULE

The Link to the Station Name is to the Station's HOME PAGE | MP3 and OGG VORBIS streams are playable on the WINAMP player | RP = Real Player | WMP = Windows Media Player | indicates a SCALED audio stream - the stream is accessible to those with connections slower than the rated speed of the stream (see the Internet Radio for Techies page for a complete explanation of "scaling" and the Stations page for details about how a specific station applies it) | M indicates a MONO stream; all others are STEREO

At the Opera with Sean Bianco: Puccini: Tosca
Tosca is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on January 14, 1900. The work, based on Victorien Sardou's 1887 French-language dramatic play, La Tosca, is a melodramatic piece set in Rome in June 1800, with the Kingdom of Naples's control of Rome threatened by Napoleon's invasion of Italy. It contains depictions of torture, murder and suicide, yet also includes some of Puccini's best-known lyrical arias, and has inspired memorable performances from many of opera's leading singers.
Puccini saw Sardou's play when it was touring Italy in 1889 and, after some vacillation, obtained the rights to turn the work into an opera in 1895. Turning the wordy French play into a succinct Italian opera took four years, during which the composer repeatedly argued with his librettists and publisher. Tosca premiered at a time of unrest in Rome, and its first performance was delayed for a day for fear of disturbances. Despite indifferent reviews from the critics, the opera was an immediate success with the public. This all star recording from 1958 stars Renata Tebaldi, Giuseppe DI Stefano and George London. Francesco Molinari-Pradelli conducts. (3 hrs.)

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Mascagni, Cavalleria Rusticana, Leoncavallo, Pagliacci
I return this Sunday to Sony Classical's ongoing series "The Metropolitan Opera" derived from the audio archives of the Met. These are airtapes of live broadcasts of onstage performances. The old reel-to-reels have been digitally mastered for compact disc to the public. They preserve for posterity the voices of singers from what some consider the Golden Age of opera singing. "Rustic Chivalry" and "Clowns" are two verismo warhorses of the repertoire that have often been staged back-to-back. They were given together at the Met on April 11, 1964. Nello Santi directs the Metropolitan Opera orchestra and chorus. Two American star singers at the Met from that period are heard in the Mascagni one-acter: soprano Eileen Farrell as Santuzza opposite tenor Richard Tucker as Turiddu. In Leoncavallo's work it's Italian tenor Franco Corelli, cast as Canio, who gets to belt out that world-famous lament,"Laugh, clown..!" (3 hrs., 30 min.)

Buhne: Radio (Starts at 1905/3:05PM): Parsifal von Richard Wagner

Opera [start time approximate]: THE FELIX WEINGARTNERARTNER ORGY
An important conductor in the classical tradition, Felix Weingartner (June 2, 1863-May 7, 1942) impressed the world with his rigorous, balanced interpretations of the great repertory. We’ll hear some of his Mozart, Handel, Wagner, and Brahms, and especially his Beethoven, including some of the symphonies — Weingartner was the first conductor to record them all.

Wagner: Götterdämmerung, Brünnhilde’s Immolation; Flagstad, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (September 11, 1936; Koch Schwann)
Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in c, Op. 67; London Philharmonic (1933)
Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in d, Op. 125; Helletsgruber, Anday, Maikl, Mayr, Vienna State Opera Chorus, Vienna Philharmonic (1935, Naxos) (approx. 3 hrs.)
