LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Donizetti, La Fille du Regiment (1840)

I have never officially scheduled a recording of this French opera comique for broadcast before, although I have aired what I now understand was its historic first complete recording on Sunday, February 18, 2012, when I had to come up with an opera presentation on short notice and grabbed the Sony Classical CD's out of our station's extensive holdings of classical music on disc. Recorded live in performance in 1940 at the Met, it stars soprano Lily Pons as Marie, the"Daughter of the Regiment" and comic basso Salvatore Baccaloni as Sargeant Sulpice of the 21st Regiment of Napoleon's army.

La Fille du Regiment has a considerable discography. Another now historic recording of it has come into my hands, taped originally in 1968 and reissued in digital sonic upgrade on compact disc in 1986. This is a studio recording made in London's Kingsway Hall for the Decca/London label. That esteemed diva Joan Sutherland is Marie, singing opposite superstar tenor Luciano Pavarotti as her soldier boyfriend Tonio, who gets to sing nine (count 'em!) high C's. It was Sutherland who was largely responsible for the revival of the bel canto repertoire. She "had the chops," as they say, for this challenging vocal music. Sutherland's husband conductor Richard Bonynge directs the orchestra and chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Robert Schumann's "Genoveva"

Beethoven is probably the best known composer of one-and-done when it comes to operas. However, there were others, and on this week’s Sunday Opera (4/26 3:00 p.m.), we’re focusing on one of those: Robert Schumann’s 1850 work “Genoveva.”

He poured a great deal of himself into this opera that is loosely based on the life of Genevieve de Brabant, and when critics weren’t kind, he decided to “cut his losses” and never write another even though he had hoped to write other operas about some familiar figures like Lohengrin, Parsifal, the Nibelungen, and Til Eulenspiegel.

The opera libretto by Schumann and Robert Reineck is a prime example of German Romanticism. It follows Genoveva (Julia Faulkner) who becomes the focus of the revenge of a nurse named Margaretha (Renate Behle) who was dismissed by her Genoveva’s husband Count Siegfried (Alan Titus).

Siegfried’s head servant, Golo (Keith Lewis), is convinced to help Margaretha and tricks an old servant, Drago (Carl Schultz), to visit Genoveva’s bedchamber where Golo has stationed other servants. Genoveva is then accused of adultery, and the news is brought to Siegfried who orders Golo to put her to death. Margaretha is thrilled by this until the ghost of the murdered Drago, who was murdered in Genoveva’s bedchamber to ensure his silence, appears to Margaretha. He tells her that she will die a horrific death if she does not reveal the truth.

Genoveva is saved from the hands of the assassins, and Margaretha unveils the truth. Genoveva is forgiven (even though she didn’t do anything), and the opera ends happily.

Other members of the cast include Harald Stamm, Johann Tilli, and Carl Schultz. Gerd Albrecht conducts the Chorus of the Hamburg State Opera and The Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra.

We’ll continue with more music of Schumann after the opera with a piece that has been called an oratorio and a musical-theatre work, Scenes from Goethe’s Faust.

This three part work was written for soloists, boys’ choir, full choir, and orchestra and was completed between 1844 and 1853. There are three distinct sections centered on Goethe’s tale.

1. Gretchen’s Story
2. Faust’s Death & Redemption
3. Faust’s Transfiguration

This recording, made in Poland in 2009, features soloists Iwona Hossa, Christiane Libor, Anna Lubanska, Ewa Marciniec, Daniel Kirch, Jaakko Kortekangas, and Andrw Gangestad. They’re joined by the Warsaw Boys’ Choir and the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra. Antoni Wit conducts. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
