LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

KEY TO READING THE SCHEDULE

The Link to the Station Name is to the Station's HOME PAGE | MP3 and OGG VORBIS streams are playable on the WINAMP player | RP = Real Player | WMP = Windows Media Player | indicates a SCALED audio stream - the stream is accessible to those with connections slower than the rated speed of the stream (see the Internet Radio for Techies page for a complete explanation of "scaling" and the Stations page for details about how a specific station applies it) | M indicates a MONO stream; all others are STEREO

Opera: “Fellow Travelers”

On October 23 and 24, IPR’s Opera in October airs the DMMO’s production of their 2nd Stages Summer series featuring Spear’s and Pierce’s opera centered around Mallon’s 2007 novel called "Fellow Travelers."

The forward-looking McCarthy-era-based work, lingers around the veiled “Lavender Scare.” The New York Times said: “...with its smart music and sharp-edged romantic drama, ‘Fellow Travelers’ seems assured of lasting appeal.” The DMMO productions stars Baritone Joseph Lattanzi, who is known for his portrayal of the role of Hawkins Fuller in the Cincinnati Opera’s world-premiere of “Fellow Travelers.” And tenor, Christian Sanders, presents a poignant and heartbreaking performance as the recent college graduate, Timothy Laughlin. SPECIAL PROGRAM: P2 Koncerten - Kapelkoncert: Stormen - tilbage i København

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Haydn: Armida

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera host Keith Brown writes:

It was only last month when I aired an opera by the same name in its French form, Francoeur's Armide. In the eighteenth century there were so many operas that bore this name about the beautiful sorceress/princess, or named after the noble knight Rinaldo who loved her. Opera librettists spun off so many variants of the basic story derived from the epic poem by Tasso. I last presented Haydn's 1784 take on the story way back on Sunday, September 20, 1987. It's been more than four decades since the Philips label gave us a recorded cycle of the long neglected operas of Joseph Haydn on stereo LPs. The Hungarian conductor Antal Dorati took part in the Philips Haydn opera series, leading the Chamber Orchestra of Lausanne.

The 1979 recording featured American soprano Jessye Norman in the title role. She was a truly magnificent Armida, but mezzo Cecilia Bartoli has equalled or outdone her in a recording made live in performance in 2000 in Vienna's Musikverein hall. It benefits by the participation of the musicologist/conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the pioneering period instrument ensemble he founded, the Concentus Musicus Wien. Teldec reissued this historically-informed Armida in 2013 in its revived "Das Alte Werk" line. Writing for Fanfare magazine (March/April, 2001issue) reviewer Bernard Jacobson states unequivocally, "This is a fascinating opera, fascinatingly played, vividly recorded and stunningly sung by Bartoli et al. ...we are unlikely to be given a better recorded performance in decades." (3 hrs., 30 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: WFMT Opera Broadcast Series
Britten's "Billy Budd" from LA Opera
LA Opera is taking us to sea on this week’s Sunday Opera with their recent production of Benjamin Britten’s 1951 opera “Billy Budd.” Based on the novel by Herman Melville, the story centers on the naïve and innocent sailor who, after being transferred to a new ship, becomes the obsession of the Master-at-arms, John Claggart, who is accidentally killed by Billy when Claggart pushes him too far. This results in the hanging of the young Budd who is loved by the crew and, for whom they would mutiny, but Billy, true to his good nature, resignedly goes to his fate and is hanged for the death of Claggart.

Liam Bonner is featured as Billy, Greer Grimsley is the hard-nosed Claggart, and Richard Croft is the ship’s captain, Capt. Vere. James Conlon conducts.

After the opera, Michael Kownacky will continue with more music by Britten in two of his orchestral works. We’ll begin with Britten’s Concerto for Piano featuring Barry Douglas at the piano who is joined by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France conducted by Marek Janowski and conclude the afternoon with the Symphony for Cello and Orchestra with cellist Truls Mork and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Neeme Jarvi. Opera: “Fellow Travelers”

On October 23 and 24, IPR’s Opera in October airs the DMMO’s production of their 2nd Stages Summer series featuring Spear’s and Pierce’s opera centered around Mallon’s 2007 novel called "Fellow Travelers." The forward-looking McCarthy-era-based work, lingers around the veiled “Lavender Scare.” The New York Times said: “...with its smart music and sharp-edged romantic drama, ‘Fellow Travelers’ seems assured of lasting appeal.” The DMMO productions stars Baritone Joseph Lattanzi, who is known for his portrayal of the role of Hawkins Fuller in the Cincinnati Opera’s world-premiere of “Fellow Travelers.” And tenor, Christian Sanders, presents a poignant and heartbreaking performance as the recent college graduate, Timothy Laughlin.
