LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

At the Opera with Sean Bianco: Host Sean Bianco brings you a full-length opera featuring great voices from the past and present followed by “Opera Potpourri.”

Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata (1981)
La traviata or The Fallen Woman is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on La Dame aux camélias (1852), a play by Alexandre Dumas fils adapted from his own 1848 novel. The opera was originally titled Violetta, after the main character. It was first performed on March 6, 1853 at La Fenice opera house in Venice. Piave and Verdi wanted to follow Dumas in giving the opera a contemporary setting, but the authorities at La Fenice insisted that it be set in the past, "c. 1700". It was not until the 1880s that the composer's and librettist's original wishes were carried out and "realistic" productions were staged. La traviata has become immensely popular and is among the most frequently performed of all operas.

Sunday Opera: Mozart'sMitridate, re di Ponto
from The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen
Mozart was a fearless youth of just fourteen when he composed Mitridate, re di Ponto.

The ambitious juvenile work with incorporated ballet dancing embodies the burgeoning genius of this extraordinary composer: based on a play by Jean Racine about King Mitridate and his two sons, who all fall in love with the same princess, Aspasia, amidst a major conflict with the Roman Empire.

Mozart began his first journey to Italy in 1769, six weeks before his fourteenth birthday. He wrote his dramma per musica in Milan, where he had singers at hand. As was expected of him, he customised the roles to each individual singer, showering them with vocal stardust. The composer wrote to his father that “an aria must be adapted to the singer as a well-made set of clothes”. It must have been quite overwhelming for a 14-year-old boy to face a prima donna or a troublesome tenor adept in vocal pyrotechnics.

Indeed, Mozart toiled strenuously before the singers at the Italian theatre were finally satisfied. Mitridate, re di Ponto requires rhythmic vitality and with Skånes Dansteater’s ballet performance, the opera is given a new lease of life.

In the historical setting of the Old Stage, conductor Lars Ulrik Mortensen offers a veritable guarantee of temperament and musical glow in Concerto Copenhagen’s interpretation of Mozart’s tonal world. Mitridate, re di Ponto is a must-see for Mozart fans with a love of awe-inspiring vocals. Mozart in his youth was, indeed, daunted by neither heights nor tongue-twisting coloraturas.

WDR 3 Oper: Dafne

After the opera, join Michael Kownacky for more interesting music by Mason Bates. We’ll begin with an incredibly interesting a cappella work for a 12-member group entitled “Sirens.” Framed by references from Homer’s “Odyssey,” the work looks to a variety of sources. The second work is a 12-movement orchestral piece entitled “Anthology of Fantastic Zoology” which is full of wonderful variety and is based on the mythological creatures found in the book of the same title by Jorge Luis Borges.

We’ll change gears a bit and close out our time together with a remarkable piece by a composer who died far too young. Hans Rott’s career hadn’t really begun when he succumbed to tuberculosis at the age of 25. We do, however, have a catalog of 18 works he left behind that hint at what “could have been.” Our final piece of the afternoon will be Rott’s Symphony No. 1 in E major which he began when he was 19.

This week’s Sunday Opera truly does offer a wonderful variety of excellent music and performances. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
