LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Both Europe and North America is now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In the United States, subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK and Portugal add one (1) hour and in most of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are now three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are now on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Opera: Wagner: Das Rheingold
Gods, goddesses, giants, and dwarves struggle to be lords of the ring, but as Wagner's mammoth Der Ring des Nibelungen unfolds, the ring's curse unleashes its vengeance. As the king of the gods, Vitalij Kowaljow, a powerful Ukrainian bass, is a "refined Wotan, expressive and subtle" (Los Angeles Times). Wotan's insistent wife Fricka is Michelle DeYoung a "remarkably powerful mezzo" (Opera Today). Also featured are Arnold Bezuyen as Loge, Gordon Hawkins as Alberich and Graham Clark as Mime.
Conducted by James Conlon and sung in German. (3 hrs.)

The curse of the ring runs its course in the final chapter of Wagner's epic music drama. The Twilight of the Gods begins with the rapturous love shared by Brünnhilde (soprano Linda Watson) and Siegfried (tenor John Treleaven). But the evil Hagen (bass Eric Halfvarson) plots against Siegfried, first administering a magic potion of forgetfulness and then murdering him. Making the ultimate sacrifice, Brünnhilde heroically cleanses the ring of its curse, and the reign of the gods comes to an end in a spectacular finale unparalleled in opera. From the opening prologue drenched in doom to the dramatic climax of the final apocalyptic "Immolation Scene," Götterdämmerung soars to heights of heroism and proclaims the redemptive power of love.
Conducted by James Conlon and sung in German. (4 hrs., 45 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Los Angeles Opera
Hosted by Duff Murphy.

In just 23 seasons, the LA Opera has become, under the leadership of The Eli and Edythe Broad General Director Plácido Domingo, the United States' fourth largest opera company and now "...stands out as a newly important force in American Opera." (Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times) Together, they have prepared an artistically diverse and adventurous season that features seven operas, including a complete "Ring" cycle, the first ever to be presented in Los Angeles.

Today, LA Opera commemorates the 250th anniversary year of the death of George Frideric Handel with the company premeiere of "Tamerlano" starring Bejun Mehta in the title role and Plácido Domingo as Bajazet. William Lacey conducts the LA Opera Orchestra and soloists. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
